UK and US NGOs provide £1.5m worth of medical care inside Ukraine – Ukraine

Human Appeal announces emergency response plans in partnership with US and Ukrainian NGOs

7 April 2022: Human Appeal, one of the UK’s fastest growing international NGOs, has announced plans to provide emergency humanitarian aid inside Ukraine.

Human appeal will collaborate with the American non-profit association Globus Relief to deliver £1.5 million worth of medical supplies inside Ukraine to meet the wider medical needs of the population, as well as civilians injured by the ongoing shelling.

Five containers containing nearly 3,000 varieties of medical supplies will arrive by air in a neighboring country, then cross the border by truck and be handed over to partners inside Ukraine. Medical supplies are becoming increasingly scarce as 77 attacks on health facilities in Ukraine have been recorded by the United Nations World Health Organization since the start of the conflict.

In addition, Human Appeal supports temporary civilian shelters inside Ukraine run by a local NGO, the Ukrainian Muslim Women’s League. Human Appeal aims to help some 2,700 internally displaced civilians find shelter, food and sanitation as they move away from the towns under attack. Temporary shelters are spread across the Ukrainian cities of Chernivtsi, Lviv and Vinnytsia. According to UN estimates, Ukraine has 6.5 million people displaced by the conflict, many of whom need urgent medical care.

“The humanitarian situation in Ukraine is worsening with the incessant shelling of civilian areas. More and more people are being evacuated from different towns and villages to relatively safer towns. Many families are arriving in these towns in search of a shelter and basic food. As an international humanitarian organization, we can see the same tragic pattern unfolding in Ukraine that we are facing in Syria with millions of families bombed, displaced and starving. our responsibility to step up and help,” commented Raya Homsi, head of institutional funding at UK NGO Human Appeal.

The announcement of Human Appeal’s latest humanitarian support initiative comes as new research shows there is little awareness among the British public of the scale of ongoing humanitarian crises around the world. In a survey conducted by YouGov on behalf of Human Appeal, a quarter of respondents in the UK did not know the scale of the humanitarian crises affecting millions of people in long-standing conflict areas such as Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen and Somalia.

The research was conducted last month to mark six and eleven years of escalating conflicts in Syria and Yemen. These two long-lasting crises have been aggravated by the situation in Ukraine, which supplies large volumes of cereals to both countries.
