Silicon carbide cooperation between SEMIKRON and ROHM

Santa Clara, Calif. and Kyoto, Japan, July 14. 12, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Nuremberg-headquartered SEMIKRON and Kyoto-based company ROHM Semiconductor have collaborated for more than a decade on the implementation of silicon carbide (SiC) inside power modules. Recently, the latest 4 from ROHMe generation of SiC MOSFETs has been fully qualified in SEMIKRON’s eMPack® modules for automotive use. Therefore, both companies cater to the needs of customers around the world.

SEMIKRON has announced that it has been awarded a €1 billion contract to supply its innovative eMPack® power modules to a major German automotive manufacturer, starting in 2025. The company has developed fully sintered assembly and connection technology “Direct Pressed Die” (DPD). This results in extremely compact, scalable and reliable traction inverters. The eMPack® module technology has been specially designed for medium and high power SiC-based converters to fully exploit the properties of the new semiconductor material. Additionally, SEMIKRON provides evaluation boards for eMPack® that integrate ROHM’s gate driver ICs, helping customers shorten the time to evaluation and adoption. In the future, SEMIKRON also plans to use ROHM’s IGBTs in modules for industrial applications.

“With ROHM’s SiC technology, SEMIKRON’s innovative eMPack® family of power modules is poised to make a significant contribution to reducing emissions through electric mobility,” said Karl-Heinz Gaubatz, CEO and CTO of SEMIKRON . “ROHM’s SiC technology delivers more efficiency, performance and reliability in automotive and industrial applications.”

ROHM produces SiC components in-house in a vertically integrated manufacturing system and thus provides high quality energy efficient products while ensuring a constant market supply. ROHM’s production subsidiary, SiCrystal, located in Nuremberg, Germany, plans to greatly increase its silicon carbide wafer capacities and human resources – to produce several 100,000 substrates per year.

“We are delighted that SEMIKRON has selected ROHM as the SiC supplier for the automotive-qualified eMPack®. This partnership leads to a competitive solution for the use of inverters in electric vehicles,” said Isao Matsumoto, President and CEO of ROHM Co., Ltd.. “ROHM offers a broad portfolio of SiC devices, from chips to enclosures. As the demand for SiC will continue to grow, ROHM will accelerate investment and product development based on the technology we have cultivated as a leading manufacturer of SiC. In addition, our company will continue to offer solutions and provide customer support,” continues Isao Matsumoto.

ROHM has been a leader in SiC technology and products since beginning the world’s first mass production of SiC MOSFETs. ROHM’s Last 4e The generation of SiC MOSFETs, which has been adopted by SEMIKRON, offers industry-leading low on-resistance with improved short-circuit withstand time. These features contribute significantly to extending driving time and miniaturizing EV batteries when used in traction inverters. Thus, the company develops advanced and energy-efficient SiC devices that reduce environmental impact.

Both companies will continue to contribute to automotive technology innovations by providing optimal power solutions that meet market needs through the fusion of device/control technologies from ROHM and module technologies from SEMIKRON that can optimally combine them. .

About SEMIKRON
SEMIKRON is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of power modules and systems mainly in the medium power range (approx. 2 kW up to 10 MW). Our products are at the heart of modern motor drives and energy-efficient industrial automation systems. Other areas of application include power supplies, renewable energies (wind and solar energy) and electric vehicles (passenger cars, vans, buses, trucks, forklifts, etc.). SEMIKRON’s innovative power electronics products allow our customers to develop smaller and more energy efficient power electronic systems. These systems in turn reduce global energy demand.
