The final audit was performed at Freudenberg Medical’s new operation in Beverly, Massachusetts. This crowns a multi-year global effort that has involved several hundred employees and represents a significant investment in processes and systems to conserve natural resources and protect the environment.

“Freudenberg Medical is a leader in sustainable manufacturing for the medical device and pharmaceutical industry. It is our social responsibility to protect the environment and preserve the earth’s resources as much as possible,” said Max Gisbert Kley, CEO of Freudenberg Medical. “Sustainability is an important guiding principle of the Freudenberg Group, a principle that all of our employees strive to uphold. We are committed to sustainability and have a responsibility to the communities in which we operate. The completion of the worldwide ISO 14001 certification process is a strong testimony to this commitment.

In a structured management approach, Freudenberg Medical strives to reduce the environmental impact and achieve carbon neutrality in its manufacturing activities. Recent key projects include the Carrick-on-Shannon site in Ireland, which has optimized its energy efficiency as part of its ISO 50001 energy management system certification. This project received the “We All Take Care” for sustainability awarded by the parent company, the Freudenberg Group. Additionally, the Indiana manufacturing site partnered with its regional university system for a comprehensive sustainability audit that helped it identify key improvements.

Freudenberg Medical improved global energy efficiency by 10% over a 12-month period and reduced total waste by 36% in 2021 (waste in tons per USD of sales). Currently, renewable energy sources represent more than 50% of the indirect energy used by its manufacturing sites. Freudenberg Medical has also made significant progress in shifting to a circular economy model. To date, 100% of all silicone and plastic materials, which remain unused or must be discarded in the manufacturing process, are recycled. Additionally, modern production processes such as cold and hot runner tooling systems have helped Freudenberg reduce the excessive use of raw materials.
